Anna's Hope
Wateraid - in Ethiopia The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are international targets to halve world poverty by 2015, agreed upon by all 189 United Nations member states at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000. The work of Wateraid makes a significant contribution to reaching the goals especially through
actions to halve the proportion of people without access to safe water and sanitation, which are specific targets within goal
seven. Ethiopia, the fourth largest and second most populous country in Africa is still among the
least well served countries in the world in terms of water and sanitation. Water-related diseases are rife, child mortality
high and health services are limited. The aim of WaterAid is to improve the livelihoods of poor people in Ethiopia through the provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education using technologies that are appropriate to local conditions, affordable and easy to maintain. However, projects vary from region to region depending on the natural environment which varies greatly. Send a Cow
Working with people in groups, to make use of peer support, Send a Cow aid workers train in the use of their natural resources wisely to build thriving mixed crop-livestock farming systems. This includes training in natural – or organic – farming; and in livestock care. Where necessary, the charity provide good quality animals, seeds and tools to get families started. As well as being cheap and effective, the farming methods promoted are kind to the environment. Families learn how to combat environmental challenges such as soil erosion and water shortages – often the result of climate change. It’s an approach that is enabling whole communities in seven African countries to move towards self-sufficiency. Lesotho struggles hugely from a lack of food sovereignty/sustainability. Send a cow community outreach workers work with poor families to teach them sustainable agricultural techniques. These skills have been specifically designed to accommodate the tough conditions of Lesotho – mountainous terrain, cold, harsh winters and water scarcity. One such technique is building a ‘keyhole garden’. Used by many across Africa, these space- and water-conserving gardens recycle as they grow, allowing a steady and varied supply of food throughout the year. This model of support extends over seven countries across Africa where nearly 16,000 families have been helped. Also, every person that the Send a Cow aid workers have worked with will go on to help 10 others, meaning Send a Cow has improved many more lives. Anna's Hope
Anna’s Hope is a charity dedicated to giving Hope to children and young people diagnosed with a Brain Tumour. It was inspired by Anna Olivia Hughes, who tragically died from a brain tumour aged only 3 years and 8 months, and was set up by Anna’s parents Rob and Carole Hughes and her five Godparents in October 2006. Following further investigation with consultants and scientists, they have confirmed that much more could be done for children diagnosed with brain tumours, specifically in the area of research and aftercare. Therefore the aim of the trust will be to raise money to fund research into the cure of children with brain tumours and improve the rehabilitation facilities and support available to those children who are hopefully cured. |
